Installing New Virus Definitions Files
======================================
The following document details the virus definitions update
procedures for:
* Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
* Norton AntiVirus 3.0
* Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
* Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
* Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
* Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually
* Intelligent Updater File List
TIP1: Be aware that if you are receiving this update on disk, the
Intelligent Updater program file is located on disk one. All other
update files are located on disk two.
TIP2: Be sure to read the WHATSNEW.TXT for important information
about new viruses. The new macro virus that infects Microsoft Excel
files requires you to add .xl? to the Program File Extensions list.
For instructions, see WHATSNEW.TXT.

Intelligent Updater
=====================================================================
As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent
Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the
program then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of
this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton
AntiVirus version.
The Intelligent Updater program file is located on your virus
definitions update disk one. The program name, which changes from
month to month, uses the following form:
mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
For example, 05NAV97a.EXE is the virus definitions files update for
May, 1997.
=====================================================================
Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
=====================================================================
Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Windows
95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must update it
using the NAV 95.0b patch or upgrade to version 2.0. As viruses
continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the NAV virus
definitions files have grown in size to counter the latest threats.
Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will continue
to accept the latest (and largest) virus definitions files. Using
older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 can cause false
detections when the new virus definitions are installed. This latest
patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large
volumes) and will be required to apply the May 1997 virus
definitions set.
Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95 do not require anti-
virus engine updates at this time.
To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, copy this file to a
temporary directory and execute it to extract the necessary files.
Then click Setup to begin the installation process.
The NAV 95.0b patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
You must apply the latest virus definitions set update (for example,
05NAV97a.EXE) after completing the program update.
NAV950B.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files
updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America
Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at
(800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:
------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
Updater program (05NAV97a.EXE).
For example, your A: drive.
2. Double-click (launch) the file 05NAV97a.EXE.
3. Follow the instructions on screen.
4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
definitions.
=====================================================================
Norton AntiVirus 3.0
=====================================================================
Important Notice: If your version is dated before June 1, 1996
(NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE), you should update it using this Engine Update
(UPDATEME.EXE). As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming
regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to
counter the latest threats. Applying this patch will ensure that your
installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest) virus
definition files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can cause
false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated
May 1997 or later.
To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and
execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step
instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
The NAV 3.10 patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
05NAV97a.EXE) after completing the program update.
UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files
updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America
Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at
(800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one of
the following procedures. Either procedure will update both the
Norton AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components.
To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Follow the on screen instructions.
4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
definitions as well.
To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Exit Windows entirely.
For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent

For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
3. From the DOS prompt, type 05NAV97a.EXE and press Enter.
4. Follow the instructions on screen.
5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
definitions as well.

=====================================================================
Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
(NAVNET.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must upgrade your
